is running a rich person's pursuit ?

Some numbers that seem to support that we have some way to go to make running (and ultrarunning) for all. A recent FT article explored who is running and the impact of parkrun. One conclusion that jumped out was that “Exercise tends to be a rich person’s pursuit, but running skews even richer … about half of regular runners are in the top socio-economic (and richest) category” Given that 33% are in the this category it means that richer people are about twice as likely to run as others. Other pursuits such as walking, football and cycling are more equitable. Only golf and tennis were more skewed to the rich. What can we in the ultrarunning world do to address this?
